There’s a whole lot to see and do in Kansas, but sometimes you just need people to recommend some things that could be exciting and new. So, maybe you’ve got a weekend coming up with nothing to fill it with, and you’re looking for a fun outing? Try out this South Central Kansas trip I’ve put together around places that are just perfect. They’re beautiful, they’re tasty, there’s so many here that I stuck close to home and made sure to plan it with a little less driving. Unless you are coming from way up North, in which case it’s probably double the car time! Anything for a good time, right?
First up is Butcher Falls out of Sedan, KS. They have a great rushing waterfall whenever it's just rained, especially in spring. The only way to get in, though, is to go through Red Buffalo Ranch. Make sure to call ahead!
If you're looking to get into Butcher Falls and the rest of Red Buffalo Ranch call (620) 725-4022 or stop by the gift shop (that has a coffee and ice cream bar in the back) and talk to Mary Kurtis.

While you're in and around Sedan, you have to (yes, it's a must) stop by Buck's for BBQ so good you'll want to make this trip every year.
Their barbecue and steaks are simply perfection, I promise. At 1898 US-166 BUS, Sedan, KS
Next up is the most gorgeous falls (in my opinion) in the whole state. Cowley Lake Falls is a gorgeous addition to this trip, and a must-see, if you've never been.
In the morning, you're hungry and ready to start the day (or around noon, up to you) I'd recommend you try out the Red Rooster for all your food-related needs. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, always delicious.
Right next door to the Harper Motel? How convenient!
Here's the final star of the show, the Gypsum Hills. Another region of Kansas that makes outsiders say "Wait, that's Kansas?" when they see it. It's gorgeous, and worth the exercise needed to really love the nature here. Perfection!
