Here in Kansas, we get a lot of weird things attached to us. The Wizard of Oz, for one, is a unique movie that starts off in Kansas and goes to a fantasy land where nothing truly makes sense to us. We’ve got our own unique place like that, full of art and a few oddballs, and it’s name is Lucas. I hope you like mosaics!
The city of Lucas, Kansas has quirk and character in excess, for sure. They're a centerpiece of folk art, and the entire town is simply covered in it. Its 400 or so residents have contributed most of it themselves.
Out in a field, you can find anything, like a mighty colorful dragon. This piece and others in the town are created by repurposing "junk" and creating beautifully strange sculptures...
The Garden of Eden is also a strange bit of Lucas art. The sculptures depict biblical scenes from the garden, as well as a glass coffin holding the mummified body of the artist. Creepy!
They're the Grassroots Art Center of America, and that means art is everywhere in this small town. This building here is shaped like a giant toilet. Sounds like art to me!
Not even vehicles can escape this treatment of folk art. This one has plastic dinosaurs made to look like they're melting in tar and turning into oil like they did naturally. Fossil fuels can be art as well!
