There’s plenty of open road in the Sunflower State to explore when you’re on a road trip. However, when hunger strikes on the road, what do you do? Would you rather chance eating gas station food, or would you rather find a new restaurant to satisfy you? It’s an easy choice, if you’re near any of these 11 great roadside restaurants. In no particular order, here’s some great restaurants to choose from on your next trip. Have fun!
1. Buffalo Roam Steakhouse - 740 E South St # 36 Mankato, Kansas
This steakhouse right off the highway does buffets well, and Tuesdays are my favorite. Their fried chicken and baked cod is a favorite of mine, whenever I'm out that way. However, just so you know, there's no buffet on Wed/Thurs nights.
2. The Rusty Tractor - 410 N Main St, Kensington, Kansas
Though not every menu item is as large as the Annihilator, they're all just as delicious. This eatery is rustic with a country theme that'll make you feel right at home.
3. Southern Comfort Cafe - 114 E 4th St Chapman, Kansas
There's not much to explain about this restaurant, because it's all in the name. They do down home cooking from scratch, like it's meant to be, and there's no other way we'd have it. It's definitely some of the best roadside breakfast that I've had!
4. The Branding Iron II - 1310 State St Phillipsburg, Kansas
The specials are always delicious at The Branding Iron, and you'll find that breakfast is the best time to be here. However, their other fare isn't too shabby either. Come on in and dine!
5. Captain Hook's Fine Dining - 1902 West US Highway 36 Wheeler, Kansas
Though I wouldn't expect the Captain himself at the door, what you can expect, however, is good food. Their chicken is some of the best I've found, and they don't leave much to be desired. If you like home cooking, then here's a home for you.
6. Cattleman's Cafe II - 744 E Pancake Blvd Liberal, Kansas
Look, I have to be real with you. If you go to Cattleman's, you've gotta try the chicken fried. Once you do, that's all you'll ever order, because it's fantastic.
7. Dutch Kitchen Restaurant - 6803 W State Road 61 Hutchinson, Kansas
I know they have stunning chili and cinnamon rolls, but personally, you should order a pie the day before you get there. That way, you have one of their 72 flavors of pie waiting when you arrive!
8. MJ's Burger House - 1004 E 4th St Altamont, Kansas
Another of Kansas' great burger joints, MJ's lives up to its name. They do burgers great, and their fries match well. Make sure to bring your appetite!
9. Red Rooster Cafe - 524 West 14th Harper, Kansas
This hometown cafe is always changing things up on their menu, so you might get a surprise next time you walk through those doors. However, their fare is always tasty and the staff is small town friendly to boot.
10. Strate's Country Kitchen - E Hwy 50 Kinsley, KS
If you're a worshipper of breakfast foods, this joint is going to be one of your next regulars. They bring a "Good ol days" feel to regular breakfast foods, and great service. They aren't trying to be fancy because their food speaks volumes without all the extra help.
11. The Lumber Yard - 311 Main St Zenda, Kansas
Though I've only been here for their seafood buffet on the third Saturday of every month, their steaks have great reviews. After all, they are a steakhouse!
