Here on the prairie, you can expect a lot of little creatures, but not too many big ones. Fortunately, some of those bigger ones still roam certain areas where we can watch and learn about them from a safe distance. This park in Kansas isn’t quite like any other, and its inhabitants are something to marvel at while they last. Here’s their website, for more information.
Today's destination is Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, a park where you can tour the natural prairie and its inhabitants.
This park near Canton is home to one of the remaining herds of American Bison left in the world. In 1943, the Maxwell family preserved a 2,650 acre area for this herd, making sure it wasn't hunted to extinction like others.
A herd of bison is a great photography opportunity, but don't get too close during calving season. These giants aren't to be messed with, especially then. However, the Maxwell Wildlife Refuge gives occasional tours by tram or horseback, in addition to their observation tower.
In addition to the great herds of bison roaming the area, it isn't unheard of to also find a group of elk grazing on this prairie, either. However, they're more shy than the bison, so don't feel bad if they escape your camera lens for a while.
Tours are available year-round by reservation, but you can schedule something special for a family reunion, school, or other group. Maybe this is your next favorite getaway destination!
