What if I told you these restaurants are more than your average everyday experiences? If you’ve eaten at one of these legendary restaurants, there’s a chance you still don’t know they’re family owned unless you’re a regular customer. What makes them legendary? Their commitment to Kansans, and their flavors, of course! All of these restaurants are family owned, and you can always tell when you walk in the door that these places are like a second home to people. In no particular order: meet these new contestants for your Kansas restaurant bucket list!
1. When Pigs Fly - 7011 W Central Ave Ste 116 Wichita, KS
Though I'm not a fan of mountain oysters, they're made here and are pretty popular. The chicken and noodles is my personal favorite, with second place going to their burgers. So much better than chain restaurants!
This place is crazy about their BBQ, and this place has been family owned since '82. Catch em while it's hot, though, because they're only open 11 am-2 pm Tuesday through Saturday.
If these pulled pork sandwiches aren't an indicator of this place's taste level, I don't know what is. Personally, this is the only thing I'll keep ordering forever from the Red Barn.
Half Pint's is a buffet central that's straight out of your wildest dreams. Their lunch buffet always has fried chicken meals, their Friday dinners have steak, and weekends are for breakfast lovers! (Looks like I'll be sticking around for a three day weekend!)
6. Kristy's Family Restaurant - 101 W 6th St Concordia, KS
Between these delicious homemade pies, and their tasty breakfasts, there's no reason not to stop by here on your way through the area. Concordia's a little out of the way, but for this food, I might just make the drive.
7. L&T Family Restaurant - 1016 Main StGoodland, KS
L&T has great tex-mex food as well as some stellar fried chicken. They also have ribs and brisket? This sounds nothing short of wonderful! It's definitely on my list, you can be sure of that.
Pullman Place is that from-scratch restaurant you're always looking for, and it's right in Leavenworth. They might not be fancy, but the tastes will blow you out of the water. (Like this salmon!) They specialize in burgers though, which you'll have to taste to believe just how great they really are.
