During late December and through January, there’s a lot going on weather-wise in Kansas. However, when the time is right, this icy phenomenon appears all across the state. This rare sight can only be seen in certain conditions, and now’s the time to find them. Have you seen anything like this in Kansas before?
Do you recognize what is sitting in this gloved palm? This icy phenomenon is called a Frost Flower, and it's more rare than you'd think. For this beauty to be made, a few things have to happen all at the right time.
First, let's explain what makes these fragile beauties form. When the air temperature is below freezing, and the ground is still warm enough for the plants and their roots to be active, something magical happens.
In a way similar to how pipes burst, water and sap come out of the stem and roots of a plant as it expands due to freezing temperatures. It pushes its way out in a thin ribbon, curling around the base of the stem and sitting like a candy ribbon ball on the ground.
Sometimes you get graceful, beautiful ribbons, and other times it looks like it exploded violently. Regardless, it's hard to find these, because they usually melt by the time the sun's been on them for a little while. You'll have to hunt at just the right time for these!
These short-lived beauties are something rare that we love to see happen whenever we can. It's like spotting a double or triple rainbow - when the conditions are right, we all get to enjoy its beauty. Every time it warms up for a few days and then freezes really quick, be on the hunt for frost flowers!
