Do you believe in the paranormal? For those of you that do, this town in Kansas can be a creepy one. Every window of every old building can possibly hide a ghostly face or an unexpected sign from something that shouldn’t be there. For all the ghost hunters and thrill seekers, this haunted town is a great place to get your pants scared off! If you dare…
During the day, the normal town of Atchison is beautiful, with scenic foliage surrounding historic homes and beautiful neighborhoods.
However, some of these homes are hiding what locals believe to be a paranormal presence. If it is a haunted town, I wouldn't want to be here alone.
Depending on who you talk to, Atchison is either a very historic town or a very haunted town.
I'd like to think that maybe it's actually haunted, but I've yet to see anything too creepy myself. Even this bend in the river is said to be haunted by a spirit of a woman whose horse and buggy crashed and caused her to drown in the water.
Driving around, you'll come across many a home with mysterious stories surrounding each one of them.
They even have a trolley tour that lets you travel with others as you listen to the stories of each home and their history of paranormal activity.
One of the most popular stories is of the Sallie house, where a female spirit is said to hate males, as she was allegedly killed by a male doctor that ignored her pains.
There have been many tours and even sightings at this home, but nothing too solid has ever been captured on camera. Maybe someday!
It's definitely not somewhere I'd like to drive around alone at night though, whether the stories are true or not.
Pictured above is Molly's Hollow, an area of Jackson Park that is said to house a spirit that was found hanging after a fight with her prom date. No one knows whether it was a suicide or murder, but her form has allegedly been spotted swinging from the tree from time to time.
One of the city's most historic (and beautiful) homes is known as the Gargoyle House, aka the B.P. Waggener house.
People debate on whether the gargoyles are put there for protection or as a symbol of the house's past. The home is breathtaking inside and out, but that doesn't mean that people don't hear things sometimes. Maybe taking the trolley tour will give some answers.
Whether you're scared of ghosts or not, a trip to Atchison can be creepy or just informative.
Let us know if you've seen or heard anything in town that proves or disproves these stories! I love hearing from our readers about their experiences in these areas.
However, if you don’t believe in any of this hocus pocus, you can explore Atchison with a love of their history instead.
