Welcome to this easy rail trail, aptly named Linear Trail. This beautiful path through an area near Manhattan partially runs along the Kansas River, giving you an amazing view as well as something to explore.
A good portion of the trail is paved as well, which makes it easier to visit if the weather has been anything but sunny and dry. Knowing Kansas, we never expect the rain to come when we have something planned, but it always does.
Once you see the Kansas river, you'll find that the distance you've walked (or biked) is more than worth it. Feel free to bring along your dog as well!
On the river is this historic railroad over the water, where the view only gets better. You can't actually walk on the rails due to safety concerns, but the view from the ground is cool enough. Thinking back to when trains used to cross the whole state all day every day is just amazing.
The length of the trail runs from Anneberg Park to Northview Park. West to east, respectively. It's about 16.8 miles in total, in the form of an out-and-back trail. Of course, you can just turn around once you see the railroad to save energy.
It's truly breathtaking, especially in the later hours of the day or in the morning at sunrise. The reflected colors ont he water make all of your hard work worthwhile.
If you click on the map below, you can find a dotted green line detailing the length of the trail. Otherwise, check out AllTrails for reviews and a more detailed map of the ground here.
