In Kansas, we take our home cooked meals seriously. We love our families to death, and get attached to our favorite meals they made for us. Have you ever left the state to realize you can’t find home-cooked food like they have here in Kansas? Sometimes the foods every Kansan craves are ones we ignore while we’re home. What do you crave most when you leave?
1.Homemade cinnamon rolls
Of course, you can always make them when you're out of town, but won't you miss having fresh ones at every hometown restaurant?
2. Spangles
Spangles is just one of those chains you don't always think of while you're home, but you'll miss when you're gone. I mean, those fries are just something you don't find everywhere!
3. Tenderloin the way you really like it.
Pork tenderloin sandwiches are great when you've found a wonderful restaurant to commit to. Of course, Emery's is a great place to try!
4. Fried chicken from our favorite home-style place.
The pictured meal is from Chicken Annie's in Girard, but I'm sure patrons of that restaurant already recognized it immediately. There's a lot of great chicken places in Kansas, and trying them all is a dream we all should have.
5. Bierocks
Bierocks are a classic Kansas food that made its way here with many of our ancestors. Of course, once you've had them, you'll crave them forever.
6. Chicken and noodles
This homemade favorite is best served over mashed potatoes and is hard to come by unless you know where to look. You'll never find it over mashed potatoes, if you're looking in another state. They just don't understand.
7. Kansas City style barbecue
KC barbecue is the perfect blend of sweet and tangy, making it addictively tasty. Of course, you're probably not going to find it outside of Kansas or Missouri.
8. Fresh baked pie
Many places all over the country do make these, but there's nothing like one of our Yoder pies being fought over (or smartly ordered ahead of time) for dinner.
9. Nu-way burgers
This chain has a cult following in Kansas, with some loving it and a few that hate it. Loose meat sandwiches are less like Nu-Way and more like a canned manwich if you leave the state.
10. Culver's, if you live out East
Around Kansas City, you'll find this chain called Culver's that many of us haven't even heard of. However, it's insanely popular to those in the area, much like Cozy Inn is in Salina.
11. Puppy chow
This is another one that you can probably make with a microwave and a counter, but once you leave Kansas, you won't have the convenience of grabbing a cup of it from QT on your way through.
12. Chili with a cinnamon roll
This classic is a rarity in other states, with many people looking at you like you're insane if you even bring it up. (At least we aren't eating it over spaghetti!)
