Whether Halloween is near or not, there’s always an excuse to get the pants scared off of you. Some places, like the entire town of Atchison are just full of popular haunted attractions. What about the smaller ones? These haunted places in Kansas aren’t crazy popular, but still produce paranormal activities either way. Are you ready to get spooked?
1. Alma Cemetery (Alma)
In Alma, the cemetery is actually double haunted. People who are buried there allegedly refuse to leave, and show up in photographs pretty often. The second haunting is "The Devil's Chair," which refers to a mean old farmer who was trying to keep his land from being turned into the town cemetery. The man was mysteriously pushed into the well, causing his death. They checked out his property only to discover a stinking well, which they boarded up and ignored for years, building the cemetery anyways. In the 80s, some teenagers were looking for his ghost and one of them sat on the well, only to disappear without a sign. Legend says anyone who sits in The Devil's Chair will disappear, also.
2. Bela Vista Cemetery (El Dorado)
The ghost at this El Dorado cemetery is known as Two Moons. It's said her bones were dug up when they built the mausoleum on site, and she remains angry about the disturbance.
3. Jones Cemetery (Canton)
On nights with a full moon, you can allegedly see the shadow of a body hanging from a tree, accompanied by the sound of hoofbeats. Creepy!
4. Eldridge Hotel (Lawrence)
Legend says a cornerstone was saved from when Quatril's Raid burned down the building, and used to rebuild the hotel afterwards. Because of this stone, on the 5th floor in room 506 there is allegedly a "portal spirit" leading to the spirit world. Witnesses have spotted flashing lights, breath marks on mirrors, and doors shutting on their own.
5. Round Mound Cemetery (Cummings)
At this cemetery, you can expect to meet the witch that haunts the grounds. Though it sits on a hill, the wind doesn't seem to blow here. Years ago, this spot made TIME magazine as one of the most haunted places on Earth, but do you dare try it? After midnight, you can hear the dead screaming from their graves, or so I'm told...
6. Jail Cell - Railroad Musem (Ellis)
At this haunted jail cell at the otherwise cheerful Railroad Museum, there lives a ghost who died during a flood in '58. He was locked up, and drowned, leaving behind a spirit that allegedly walks past windows and makes odd noises when you least expect it.
7. Moon Lake (Fort Riley)
Fort Riley has many haunted locations, but the story of the Chiefs Circle is really hair-raising. If you happen to camp near it, you will see pairs of fireflies low to the ground, before you hear hollering and you get chased from your campsite. It's said that they are the eyes of the brave that still protect the circle even after death.
8. Komark House (Great Bend)
In this house (though we don't know the address) there lives a ghost who moves items across rooms, as well as furniture. He must have a ghostly gym hiding around there somewhere!
9. Achenbach (Hardtner)
This abandoned hospital is super creepy already, but the feeling of being watched follows you through every hall. There's a morgue that's eerie enough on its own, but shadows and sounds fill the rooms with paranormal feelings.
However, make sure you contact the owner before stepping near this one, because otherwise you'll find yourself in a regular, non-scary jail cell overnight.
10. Swinging Bridge Park Bike Trail (Hays)
A girl went to a party at this park, with drinking and all sorts of normal teenage merriment. She decided to walk home, but was hit by a car crossing the highway. Later, two kids were biking through the shut-down bike trail and saw a pale girl walking in the grass right in front of them, so they swerved to miss her, but found no one behind them after they had passed. Yikes!
11. The Piano House (Hiawatha)
During the late 1800's, a family was digging a new well together when a pregnant woman fell into the old one. She was unfortunately never retrieved, and now it's said you can see her in a bloody white nightgown standing in the bedroom window of the house. According to legend, the piano also moves from room to room by itself.
Though the location in Hiawatha is unknown, you may find this house by asking around local businesses.
12. LeHunt (Independence)
This old abandoned cement plant is already creepy enough for a tour, but it's also haunted. There's an old cemetery on site that are said to be haunted by the ghost of an old worker who died on the job.
13. Old Mill Plaza (Newton)
This building has been haunted by a specific old lady, who walks around in old clothes from over a century ago. Whenever you try to follow her, she always disappears right around the corner before you can catch up. Spooky!
