Though Kansans are known for their general friendliness, that doesn’t mean that some of us aren’t less than polite. In addition to those people, there’s lots of things here in Kansas to avoid that can creep up on you when you’re not paying attention. It’s funny sometimes, but usually it’s excess hassle that we don’t want to deal with if we don’t have to. How many of these things have you ran into at one point or another?
1. Suicidal road deer.
I have no idea why deer only seem to decide to leap over the road when you drive by, but these little buggers can be deadly for you too. Or at least your wallet.
2. The Trucker Tan.
It's called this because our truckers often drive long hours with an arm comfortably hanging out of the window, causing them to get an uneven tan. Or if you're pale like me, it's always a sunburn that leaves you tan on one side, and pale on the other. You'll look a little goofy, that's for sure!
3. Oklahoma or Missouri drivers.
Generally, they aren't all that bad when you're on a highway or the interstate, but within city limits, they can be annoying to deal with. Anything from speed limit misunderstandings to not knowing where they need to turn, it always seems like they're going out of the way to make your drive harder.
4. Running out of gas on a long drive.
Maybe you're new to the state or haven't traveled outside the city often, but gassing up before you go is a must when you've got a long drive ahead of you. Often times there isn't a gas station for over an hour between you and your destination.
5. Trying to get through Kellogg during a rush.
If you live in Wichita or have driven through anytime around lunch, (or after school) you know to avoid Kellogg or be stuck in traffic for possibly an hour longer than you intended. It's not fun, that's for sure.
6. Getting caught in an ice storm.
If you've lived through any of the recent ice storms we've had in Kansas, you know they can take whole towns and parts of cities and leave them without power. No power for a week is definitely not a fun experience, believe me.
7. Bad or negligent neighbors.
Neighbors that aren't polite, too nosy, or that let their yard grow to their elbows are a real problem sometimes, don't you think? If you can find a place with good neighbors, you're in for a treat.
8. Getting stuck behind farm equipment.
Not that you didn't expect it to be a long drive, but being stuck behind farm equipment that tops out at around 20 mph feels like you aren't moving at all. Anyone who tries to get somewhere in the country knows what I mean.
9. Road construction (a constant, it seems.)
Avoiding road construction is pretty hard, especially if you live somewhere like Wichita or KC where it seems to be never ending. You'll be much less stressed if you find a good way around it instead of dealing with drivers who are confused by cones.
10. Trying to get essentials at the store before a storm hits.
If you're going to the store for bread and milk, just stay home. Often, the store is out of everything except skim and hot dog buns. Then to top it off, the storm is never as bad as we hoped.
11. Being a little TOO ambitious when you're trying to get that great shot.
Unless you're absolutely a seasoned chaser, you probably shouldn't be leaving your vehicle next to anything worse than a small dust devil.
