When you think of the Sunflower State, what comes to mind? If you answered wheat, Dorothy Gale, or sunflowers (duh), you’re not alone. Here are 13 things that come to mind when people think of Kansas:
1.) The Wizard of Oz
"You're from where?! Oh, I have a feeling you're not in Kansas anymore!" *hilarious jokester gets punched in the face by annoyed Kansan*
2.) Tornadoes
Kansas sits right in the heart of "Tornado Alley" and has seen more than six EF-5 tornadoes since 1950.
3.) "All I saw was fields of wheat...It was the most boring drive ever!" (Outsiders Perspective)
Oh yeah? Sorry our beautiful golden wheat fields are so boring to you. By the way, did you know that our state produces enough wheat each year to bake 36 billion loaves of bread and enough to feed everyone in the world (more than six billion people) for about 2 weeks? You must not like eating; I understand.
4.) Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
Under head coach Bill Self, the Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball team have a 186–9 (.954) home record, including win streaks of 69, 33, and 24.
5.) EMAW!
6 football conference titles, yo!
6.) Black & Yellow, Black & Yellow, Black & Yellow!
Remember that one time we "shocked" the nation by making it to the Final 4? Good times!
7.) Westboro Baptist Church
For the record: just because they're based out of Topeka doesn't mean they represent our state.
8.) BBQ
Totally worth the acid reflux, IMO.
9.) Kansas
"All we are is dust in the wind."
10.) "Kansas is the flattest state."
This is actually false; Florida. Illinois, North Dakota, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Delaware have all measured flatter than the Sunflower State.
11.) Conservatism
Yes, Kansas does tend to lean to the right (in terms of politics), but we still have our fair share of the left!
12.) Sunflowers
We aren't nicknamed the "Sunflower State" for nothing!
13.) Boring, nothing to do, lame, etc. (Outsiders Perspective)
You're right...Our lives are pretty dull! Now please excuse us as we lay down our blankets and stargaze at the world's clearest skies...
