A neighborhood restaurant is one of those local joints that is comfortable, serves great food, and is located just down the road from your home or work. We all have a favorite; which is yours? For us, choosing one was nearly impossible, which is why we compiled this list of our favorite 12 neighborhood restaurants with food so good that you’ll be back for seconds:
1. Homer's Drive Inn (Leavenworth)
The poster child for a good old-fashioned neighborhood restaurant is that of Homer's, which serves terrific burgers and sandwiches in a low-key atmosphere, (the same way it has since it opened back in 1931).
2. Chuck & Hank's River Shack (Atchison)
Established in 2015, Chuck & Hank's may be the new kid on the block in terms of dining establishments, but don't write them off until you try their mouthwatering Mexican and BBQ cuisine. (Also, these nachos with tender pulled pork? I die!)
3. Bomber Burger (Wichita)
A big city like Wichita has several stellar local joints just waiting to be called your favorite... but Bomber Burger is the only one that has been around since the early 1950s AND serves the famous Gumby Burger and fries.
4. Suzie Q's (Kansas City)
Locals know that if you want a seat at the popular home of the "Biggest Hand-Breaded Tenderloin in KC," you best be getting there early (which shouldn't be a problem considering they serve hearty breakfasts like biscuits with homemade country gravy).
5. Country Diner (Colony)
What the small town of 401 lacks in size, it makes up for in kindness, heart, and affordable Country Diner meals that take up your entire plate.
6. Stephen's Restaurant (Sharon Springs)
For western Kansas, the best part of waking up isn't the generic coffee in their cup; it's getting to indulge in large breakfast burritos, pancakes, and other morning favorites at the popular Stephen's Restaurant.
7. Tri-Corner (Fall River)
If you are like me, you may not associate convenience stores with having the greatest food (See: The Bomb Burrito Stomach Bug Incident of 2007)... however, just one bite of Tri-Corner's homemade pies—or anything else—and your prerogative will be changed forever.
8. Domino's Mexican Grill (Hugoton)
Have you ever ordered a burger from a Mexican restaurant? I have and must say that it left much to be desired... however, this amazing Domino Burger kicked my skepticism in the butt and made me a believer! (Did we mention that their authentic Mexican dishes are also FABULOUS?)
9. Jim's Steak House (Pittsburg)
Here's a random question: Have you ever noticed that everyone you know seems to have an uncle, dad, or longtime family friend named Jim who is the coolest guy ever? Thanks to Jim's Steak House, you can now say that you have TWO lovable Jim's in your life—and this one can cook.
10. Red’s Family Restaurant (Hill City)
A good rule of thumb: If a restaurant's name has the word "family" in it (or if a restaurant prides itself on making the best pan-fried chicken this side of the state), it's bound to be one of the most delicious meals you will ever try.
11. Restaurant Salvadoreno El Pulgarcito (Shawnee)
It has been a LONG summer without this Salvadoran favorite... but don't despair, as the restaurant re-opens on September 23rd!
12. Fritz's Railroad Restaurant (Kansas City)
Not only is the food at Fritz's great, so is the fun ambiance. (Seriously... where else can you order your meal from table-side phones and have it delivered via a model train?)
