There’s nothing that sticks out more than someone who is new to a place, but we’ve been thinking about what exactly they’d do differently than us. Not that different is bad, but it is worthy of the occasional chuckle. Here are a few ways to spot someone who might have just moved here or is visiting for a while. Check it out!
1."It's so windy!"
Well... what did you expect? We've got open land for a long way, and the wind just takes advantage of that.
2. They're not prepared for inclement weather.
You know when they're a recent transplant when they start wearing heavier coats at 60 degrees or if they're running around in flip-flops and shorts while it's snowing.
3. They rush to the store at the first sign of snow.
You know the panic in their eyes as they scan the shelves. They heard the word "snow" and now they need to make sure they've got enough food for a whole week.
4. They don't want to hang out at the lake.
What person in their right mind doesn't want to go to the lake? Lakes are just as nice as oceans if you know how to use them. Plus, no sharks! It's a win-win
5. "What's a Dillons?"
No, it's not like a Dillards. Telling them it's a Kroger is something that usually works.
6. They refer to Hays as a small town.
Hays is just a town or small city, but small towns in Kansas are 5,000 residents or less. I mean, Wichita and the surrounding suburbs have only about 800,000. Perspective is everything.
7. They are terrified of tornadoes.
Tornadoes are frightening if they're headed toward your location, but after living in Kansas for a while, you don't expect them to get there very often.
8. Looking around when the test sirens go off.
It's a telltale sign of someone who has lived outside of Tornado Alley, but Kansans are especially used to hearing the signals tested weekly, at the very least.
9. They give directions in miles and don't know how long it will take.
How do you plan a trip without first knowing how long it takes to get there? Crazy people.
10. They'll complain about the "long drive" going anywhere.
Wichita to Kansas City is around three hours? Piece of cake. I can't imagine why you'd be bored.
11. They don't know both Kansas and Missouri have a Kansas City.
Kansas City, Kansas is much smaller, but you'll find that they come together as one huge city with a suburban area that brings their population to around 2 million.
12. They'll make The Joke.
You know what we mean. A true Kansan knows how it feels and how big of an eye-roll it deserves every time.
