You don’t have to travel far or hike long distances to experience some of the best hiking trails in Kansas. In fact, those one-of-a-kind trails with unique features and gorgeous views are often the outings that you will remember the most. The Ironwood Park Walking Trail near Overland Park is one of those incredible hiking trails that you do not want to miss. This trail is perfect if you want to connect with nature, enjoy a little fresh air, or bring the entire family along.
The Ironwood Park Walking Trail is a 1.9-mile loop. This trail is rated easy and is relatively flat with only a few minor hills to climb.
You’ll trek on a paved trail, which makes this path highly accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. The paved pathway also makes this one of the most kid-friendly trails in Kansas.
Along the Ironwood Park Walking Trail, you’ll come to the Prairie Oak Nature Center. At the center, there are fish, reptiles, and live mammals. Make sure you don’t miss the bird feeding area and butterfly garden that are outside.
The Historic Oxford Schoolhouse is another hidden gem on this path. The schoolhouse is one of the oldest schools in the Sunflower State and was established in 1877. The Historic Oxford Schoolhouse is opened throughout the day for tours and admission is free.
If you need a break as you explore the Ironwood Park Walking Trail, stop by the pond. Not only can you sit by the water and bask in the area’s beauty, but you’ll likely see various bird species and other wildlife.
