Joni Mitchell once sang that “you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone,” and it’s a sentence that rings true to so many situations in our lives. Do you want to know what those lyrics means to me? It reminds me of how much things changed when my family and I moved from Kansas and just how much I miss the things I once took for granted, including:
1. The food
From unique German cuising to the world famous KC BBQ, Kansas is home to some of the tastiest foods you will ever try!
2. Your college team
Sadly, college sports aren't as popular everywhere else as they are in Kansas, (probably because they aren't nearly as good as the Wildcats, Jayhawks and Shockers!) Trust me; you WILL miss the camaraderie among the teams and fans!
3. The sunrises
Kansas has the ONLY sunrises worth setting your alarm for.
4. The sunsets
If you didn't get up in time to catch the rising sun, don't fret; you can enjoy the same watercolor skies every evening!
5. Stargazing
Let's just say that Kansas's clear skies are gorgeous anytime of day!
6. The architecture
I have traveled to many places and must say that Kansas is home to the most magnificent churches and historic buildings in the United States.
7. Lightning bugs
There is nothing quite as magical as lightning bugs lighting up the summer skies!
8. Sunflower fields
I have learned the hard way that sunflower fields are harder to come by outside of Kansas...
9. "Wizard of Oz" jokes
Believe it or not, you will miss hearing those lame "Wizard of Oz" jokes. There truly is no place like home!
10. Spangles
It just tastes better...and you can only get it in Kansas!
11. Wide open spaces
Sure, Kansas gets a lot of slack for its many fields, but you don't realize how nice the openness and fresh air are until you're gone.
12. Low cost of living
Let's just say that you will NEVER find a spacious 3 bedroom, 2 bath rental home in Denver for $800/month...
13. Most of all, you will miss the people!
I know I've said it a million times before, but it's true; Kansas is home to some of the nicest, most friendly, and down-to-earth people you will ever have the pleasure to know.
