Travel season is upon us, and we’re always on the hunt for more places to explore whether you travel alone or with your family. More and more, we find ourselves exploring entire towns and cities in Kansas instead of driving to other states. Of course, that’s a wonderful thing, but we don’t want you to miss out on anything important. Today we’ve found a town that we’ve mentioned plenty of times before, but it’s time we head back. There’s just something special about this historic Kansas town that we can’t get enough of.
What exactly is so charming about this town? Well… everything! Have you made it here yet?
Welcome to Abilene, Kansas, a town in the Eastern half of Kansas, between Salina and Junction City.
They've got a population of just under 7,000 and plenty of small town charm to go around. Abilene was named after a passage in the bible (Luke 3:1), and means "city of the plains." It was a popular place for cattlemen to drive their herds, as well as the end of the Chisholm Trail at the time, making it a town with plenty to offer.
Abilene got it's early start when the Kansas Pacific Railway pushed through town and brought people with it. Today, you can enjoy rides on the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad.
After all, there's nothing that'll make you feel like you're in another century than riding an old train or steam locomotive as you relax and enjoy the view.
This one is Abilene's Victorian Inn, filled with pastel and decorative wallpaper and plenty of furniture to match. The breakfasts here are delicious, and the staff can point you anywhere you'd like to explore for the day.
