We love our fried chicken, but sometimes the restaurants that serve it the best often don’t get a lot of love for their other food. This historic Kansas restaurant might be well known for fried chicken, but we’d like to think their other meals are just as worthy of attention. Come check out this Kansas classic and order something out of the ordinary.
Hays House is a historic restaurant named after Seth Hays, grandson of Daniel Boone and founder of Council Grove.
Traditionally, people from all over would flock to Hays House for a plate of fried chicken and homemade sides, because that's their most popular dish. When it looks this good, we can't really blame them, either, because their fried chicken buffet on Wednesdays is always a treat.
However, we think there are plenty of other menu items that deserve just as much attention. They offer all sorts of breakfast items, for one. A plate full of breakfast is one great way to get to someone's heart.
For lunch and dinner, you have plenty of choices as well, from brisket, steaks, and fried catfish, to glazed salmon and shrimp multiple ways. They even serve a handful of different types of burgers.
What you probably haven't missed on the menu is their amazing desserts, homemade just like you'd get from family. The oldest continually-operating restaurant west of the Mississippi serves one mean slice of pie.
Next time you want a home style meal, check out Hays House for something good. They're open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.
Address: 112 W Main Street, Council Grove, KS 66846
Of course, if you love fried chicken anywhere, then you should enjoy it wherever you go. If you really do travel where the chicken is, then you won’t want to miss out on this great little restaurant serving amazing fried chicken.
