You’ve heard the legends and folklore; a prom-goer found hanging from a tree, a little (ghost) girl playing practical jokes on anyone who enters her home… but do they have any truth? Is Atchison indeed the most haunted city in Kansas? Today, we will be revisiting five horrifying accounts about this small town, along with comments and experiences from you, our readers:
1. Atchison County Courthouse
One location we didn't mention in our
first piece is the Atchison County Courthouse. When I went to look up alleged hauntings in the building, I was unable to find anything, but one
reader has a different take and experience:
"The Courthouse is haunted also. My husband got a marriage license application from a lady working the desk. After filling out the form I returned it because he was working. The 3 ladies working the desk the day I went to the courthouse were confused. They said that the form I was returning wasn't theirs. It looked like there's except our form was not numbered and our form did not have a red strip at the top like theirs. Our form also looked old. Puzzled the ladies asked me to call my husband so they could find out who he talked to that day. I called my husband and the ladies asked him to tell them what day he was there and to describe who waited on him. After doing so the women looked at each other and then said there is no one here by that description. She stated we are the only ones who work here. One lady said even if he had came during lunch the only other person who does work in this office looks nothing like the lady he described. My husband had encountered an older, gray haired woman the other woman that the lady in the office referred to looked nothing like this. The mystery was never solved."
2. The Sallie House
It seems as though everyone who enters the home of Sallie, a 6-year-old who died in the house during a failed appendicitis surgery, has experienced some type of paranormal activity. As we reported before, during the 1990's, a young couple renting the home reported harmless pranks being played on them, which eventually turned malicious and violent. After consulting a psychic, it was discovered that Sallie wasn't the only ghost haunting the home, but a middle-aged woman as well. (The woman is said to have been behind the more frightening attacks.) Here are a few of your experiences in the 6-year-old's home:
"I have been to the Sallie house. Never had anything bad happen to us physically but have gotten some very interesting photos. Even one of who we believe is Sallie."
"Went to the sallie house once. Had a scratch when I came out on my stomach as well as a couple other people. Dont know if the scratch came from there because we were having a party a block away."
"[I've] Been scratched at the Sallie house."
"Have been to the Sallie house twice with NCPI and experienced several interesting events."
3. Jackson Park
If there is one creepy location that most everyone has had some sort of experience with, it's Jackson Park, which is said to be home to the ghost of a young woman found hanging from a tree the morning after her high school prom. If you want to be scared, it is recommended that you visit around midnight in order to see her shadow wandering the ground, moaning and screaming. What do you all think?
"[K]inda hard to be at Jackson Park at midnight seeing as it closes at 11, the moans and screams would probably be those being arrested for being there after hours."
"I go to school at Benedictine. Haven't experienced anything here. A friend and I were at Jackson Park at 11:30, late so no families with small kids were there. We were sitting on the hill above that overlooks the bridge and Molly's Hollow. We heard a woman's scream during a pause in our conversation. Neither one of us said anything for a few moments to be sure it wasn't just something we imagined until we both agreed we heard the same thing. Definitely scared to go back there at night!!"
"I grew up there been to [sic] jakson park lots never heard anything this was in the 80s."
4. Gargoyle Home
Is the Gargoyle Home, which is alleged to have been adorned with gargoyles in honor of the former owner's supposed deal with the devil, really haunted? Based on these two experiences, I am going to say no... What do you think?
"We had just painted the gargoyle house a few months back its a truly amazing home some of my coworkers even got pictures with the gargoyles."
"Been to the gargoyle house, when it was a tea room. It's a gorgeous house inside, beautiful windows and woodwork. And not a ghost in sight."
5. Theatre Atchison
A final location we failed to mention in our first article is that of the old Theatre Atchison. Like the Atchison County Courthouse, we were unable to find any previously reported hauntings (aside from the fact that the venue previously hosted an annual haunted house); however, one
reader has a theory of her own:
"On an overnight trip to Atchison to see the premier of the Amelia Earhart in the old theater, my friends and I took some pics in the auditorium while waiting. The theater was filled is orbs! Amelia and many of her friends must have wanted to see the show too."
After hearing all of these accounts, what do you think? Is Atchison indeed the most haunted city in Kansas, or does it get a bad rap?
