On This Day In History, The Momentous Happened In Kansas
On May 8th, 1827, a fort was built near Indian territory in order to guard those traveling the Western frontier. The fort went on to be not only the first fort in Kansas, but the first permanent settlement as well.
This settlement, of course, is Fort Leavenworth.

Since its opening, Fort Leavenworth has served as the base for several regiments during numerous wars (Civil, Indian, and World Wars I & II) and has been referred to “Intellectual Center of the Army”.
