With all of the bad that goes on in this day and age, it is nice to be able to occasionally escape and revisit the nostalgic feeling of whimsy and innocence that most of us experienced during our childhood… and now, thanks to this little known fairy trail in Kansas, we can relive childlike magic anytime we want.
Welcome to the Firefly Forest; a series of magical and mysterious little "homes" adorned with brightly colored doors, tiny furniture, and other enchanting fairy-like features.
For years, no one knew who was making the charming little homes that kept springing up along Overland Park's Tomahawk Creek Trail... until the Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sharon Liese caught wind of the story and decided to make a documentary about it.
The creator of the detailed homes eventually came forward (on the agreement of anonymity) and revealed that he/she is a constant mover who likes to create magical trails wherever they go.
Sadly, shortly after Liese released her award-winning film The Gnomist , the artist behind the homes left the state for a new life in Utah and was forced to take several of their creations down due to a city ordinance banning unapproved objects. However, a few of the original pieces remain, as well as several others that have been popping up along the trail.
