If you know your Kansas history, then the Dalton Gang is one name you’ll recognize. Pretend it’s the 1890s, and you are trying to get away. Slip through the escape tunnel to the barn out back, it will lead you to freedom! Well, you can always pretend. Come find out more about the Dalton Gang and walk the same path they did all those years ago.
Welcome to the Dalton Gang Hideout, a historic home that once belonged to Eva Dalton Whipple, sister to the Dalton Gang.
Today's adventure leads you on a daring escape, or at least you can pretend to be. Though the Dalton Gang's infamy was short-lived, their legacies clearly lived much longer.
Since it opened as a museum, hundreds of thousands of people have taken the trip down the 95-foot-long tunnel. If you're not claustrophobic, it's a great experience.
The Dalton Gang escaped through a 3-foot-high tunnel, much shorter than you see here today, but we're glad it was replaced with a sturdy stone version that's tall enough to walk through.
Though it's all speculation, the home was allegedly a common stop for the gang between exploits in 1891 and 1892. Whenever there was a theft, they always suspected the home to be the source.
The rest of the area has become a history museum for the era, holding a taxidermy two-headed calf, saddles, and much more. There's much to learn about how the world once operated!
