Altoona is home to Prairie Nut Hut, a delicious spot that serves up incredible meals and doesn’t take itself too seriously. One of the most popular menu items here has quite the cult following: mountain oysters.

Prairie Nut Hut is an unassuming spot that isn't particularly eye-catching. It was opened up in the 1940s as a simple tavern, though mountain oysters wouldn't appear on the menu until a couple of decades later.

This place has an extremely casual vibe. Only about 50 people can be seated inside, and the floors are littered with peanut shells.
