Does a road trip to Arizona or somewhere even further west cost a little too much? Well you’re in luck, because Kansas has its own little miniature grand canyon. Arikaree breaks will show you a side of Kansas that many are unaware of, partially because of where it’s hiding out. Come see for yourself!
Up near the corner of Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska, is a beautiful area of Kansas called Arikaree Breaks.
The dirt here is called Loess, and that is what makes these badlands so uniquely shaped compared to other areas of Kansas. After the wind and water did its work, this mini version of our Grand Canyon is what we're left with.
You can pick up a tour from the St. Francis Area Chamber of Commerce or at the Cheyenne County Museum, where you're guided through some of the best parts. However, much of it is on unpaved county roads, so make sure the weather hasn't been too wet, and your vehicle can handle it.
Arikaree Breaks is located north of St. Francis, Kansas, along KS-27 towards the corner of the state. It’s an adventure better had without maps!
If your idea of a cool day out in Kansas nature is something a little more exciting, check out this adventure park just waiting for you to see what they’ve got in store.
