She is passionate about animal rescue and live music - traveling across the country to see a favorite band is a pretty regular occurrence! Being out hiking in the woods enjoying the scenery with her beloved dogs is another favorite hobby, and also checking out the Pokemon Go scene in whatever city she happens to be in at any given time (coffee and dog leash in hand). The Sunflower State is not exactly known as an enclave of castles. We’re far from medieval Europe, and as far as we know, Hogwarts hasn’t been discovered within the borders of Kansas. You may be surprised to learn that we actually do have a few castles in Kansas. One of our favorites is Sauer Castle – an abandoned home that is one of the state’s most beautiful pieces of architecture. It’s also surrounded by rumors of ghosts and spirits that linger on the property. Check it out:
The Sauer Castle was constructed in 1873 and designed by famed architect Asa Beebe Cross. Cross designed around 1,000 buildings in the Kansas City area, and this is one of his finest works.
Not long after the castle was built, Austrian immigrant Anton Sauer moved his family into the grandiose home. He and several children would pass away there, but the surviving family remained in the castle.
In the 1980s, one of Anton Sauer's descendants purchased the property but has done little to maintain it. The once-magnificent mansion is now something of an eyesore, and its creepy appearance definitely contributes to the ghost stories.
