Have you been thinking about the upcoming storm season this year? Because of the quiet year we seemed to have in 2020, we are supposed to have a much higher count for the 2021 tornado season. Accuweather has speculated that this spring might come suddenly and hit hard, so we’re preparing for the possibility. We don’t want another outbreak like 2011, but with how crazy the weather has already been in February of 2021, we can’t expect anything to go according to plan.
Living in Kansas or seeing media about it like Twister or The Wizard of Oz come from Hollywood, you'd think that tornadoes and Kansas go together like cheese and wine. Well, in 2020, that's not really how it happened.
We saw a strangely low number in 2020, sitting around 27 tornadoes in total for the year. Compared to the average of 80 in 1983-2012 or the average of 112 in 2003-2012, it feels like even the wind stood still during the events of 2020.
Accuweather also says that recently, there's been an early start to stormy weather in the last few years. With that in mind, we wouldn't be off the mark to assume that tornado season might hit us hard and fast after such a hard freeze in Feb 2021.
Of course, we know just how fast and deadly tornadoes can be. In 2007, Greensburg, Kansas was wiped off the map almost completely. We hope nothing that bad happens, but we're going to be looking at the skies a little more this year.
We'll keep an eye out from March through May, but considering we had next to no activity last year, we're a little wary. What will we see in spring 2021? Make sure you have your go-bags ready just in case, and always have a backup plan when traveling.
What do you think about these 2021 tornado season predictions? If you think things will be worse than 2011 or the same as 2020, we’d like to hear your thoughts in the comments. Until then, we’ll see what happens!
