One Of The Only 16-Sided Round Barns In The U.S. Is Right Here In Kansas

Have you ever seen one of the few remaining round barns in America before? This beautiful 16-sided beauty in small town Kansas might be the cool addition to your road trip that you need. Who wouldn’t love a rare barn as a pit stop to your trip? It’s a lot cooler in person, to boot.

Welcome to this amazing construction, the Fromme-Birney Round Barn out by Mullinville in southwest Kansas near Greensburg and Dodge City.

Although it's called a round barn, it's actually a shape with 16 sides, forming the round shape you may see from afar. The barn was built by hand by a German immigrant hired by Henry Fromme. Thinking about each piece being hand sawed makes it seem like a lot more work!

16-sided barns are rare as far as old structures go, with only 23 ever recorded in Kansas, and many of those have already been lost to time. To have this one still in great condition and open to the public means a lot to us!

The barn dates back to 1912, when it was built for holding draft horses. While the world moved past the need for draft horses, the barn moved to storing tractors and hay before being emptied and later transformed into a sort of museum.

Inside, you can learn a bit about the barn and local history, as well as a place to add your name to the guest registry.

The barn measures 50 feet tall and 70 feet across, making it quite the large structure to have so many sides.

Visiting this historic structure is free, and is a great addition to any road trip in the Mullinville area. It might just be a barn to some people, but to others, it's a cool part of Kansas architecture.
