Iowa is known for many things. Cornfields. Farming. Caucuses. The Iowa State Fair. But here’s one thing Iowa isn’t often known for – wild, mostly untouched forests. Yet that’s exactly what you’ll find hidden away in an Eastern Iowa State Forest.
Hold your breath as you step under towering white pines shading pools of a stream so clear it turns blue with the reflection of the sky at White Pine Hollow State Preserve near New Vienna, Iowa. You've just entered one of Iowa's National Natural Landmarks - which also happens to be one of the state's wildest places.
As one of the only stands of old growth white pines in the Hawkeye State, this preserve is certainly unique in that respect.
The huge White Pines that dwell in this preserve may be relics from a time when the climate was colder in the region and more hospitable to this northern species.
But it also affords those who brave its little-traveled paths the opportunity to smell the sweet scent of wildflowers each spring, cool off in ancient shade in the heat of summer, ponder the leaves as they fall down to carpet the forest floor every vibrant fall, or listen to the water trickle under ice glazed stones in winter.
The preserve is a 900-acre home to deer, turkeys, and trout. A three-mile loop winds through part of the preserve, passing through the forest and along the stream.
White Pine Hollow State Forest is an out-of-the-way place best for adventurous, experienced hikers, and while an old walking road is present, trail markings will likely be old or in poor condition. It's easy to become lost if you're not careful!
White Pine Hollow is located 20 miles west and a bit north of Dubuque; the parking area is unpaved and is on the south side of the preserve at the end of White Pine Lane.
Walk lightly as you drink in this bit of wild Iowa nature; the preserve is home to several endangered species of bats and snails. Have you ever explored this beautiful bit of Iowa nature?
