The remarkable Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend, Iowa has been called the Eighth Wonder of the World.

It is by the largest shrine in the world, and it was put together over 90 years by Father Paul Dobberstein, starting in 1912, and his successor Father Greving.

The Grotto is estimated to be home to about $4.3 million worth of gems, making it the largest and most expensive collection of gems and precious stones in the entire world.

The shrine began as a tribute to the Virgin Mary. When Father Paul Dobberstein was ill wih pneumonia, he prayed and promised to build a shrine on her honor of he lived. Needless to say, he kept his word.

The shrine is divided into nine sections, each one depicting a scene in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Even if you are not religious, you'll find plenty of inspiration and beauty in the artwork.
