In southeast Iowa, you’ll find a collection of historical villages that are a magical way to spend a day. The Villages of Van Buren County include a collection of small towns that all have big-time charm – Bentonsport, Birmingham, Bonaparte, Cantril, Douds-Leando, Farmington, Iowaville & Selma, Keosauqua, Milton, Mt. Sterling and Stockport. Collectively, these little villages welcome visitors with an enticing mix of friendly people, beautiful 1800s architecture and gorgeous natural areas.
The villages are dripping with history and are filled with beautiful brick buildings from the mid 1800s. Here’s a quick guide to some of the things that make these little villages the perfect place to spend a delightful day.
It's easy to lose yourself in the historical charm of the Villages of Van Buren County. The villages have numerous antique stores, artisan shops and restaurants offering home-cooked deliciousness.
The Pearson House in Keosauqua is a must-visit. The building was built in 1845 and is believed to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad. There's a trap door built into the building's floor that supports the story. There's also a one-room schoolhouse on the site, complete with original desks.
The villages include many properties that have changed little since the mid-1800s. This Presbyterian Church in Bentonsport first opened its doors in 1855. Back when the church was a new building, Bentonsport was a thriving steamboat port.
The Des Moines River winds through the heart of the villages, providing a beautiful backdrop to the region. There are plenty of boat launches on the river and it's popular with anglers.
You'll find one of Iowa's largest and prettiest state parks in the area. The Lacey Keosauqua State Park spans more than 1,600 acres along the Des Moines River and includes hiking trails, camping areas, a beach and more.
With so much to see and do, a day in the Villages of Van Buren County can pass quickly. Before you leave, head to the river to see a gorgeous Iowa sunset.
