Secret passageways are magical things. It was a secret door in a wardrobe that took the Pevensies to Narnia. A secret tunnel through a rabbit hole to a room full of doors began Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland. And there’s even a secret passageway to a culinary adventure right here in Iowa: a hidden staircase down to what might be considered something of a secret door (especially the first time you try to find it) leading into a popular underground restaurant known as Port City Underground Pizzeria in Muscatine.
In 2005, a new restaurant opened in an old building in Muscatine, Iowa: Port City Underground Pizzeria. The building itself, located at 208 West Second Street in downtown Muscatine, is a historic relic built in the year 1900.
But you do have to be able to find the restaurant in order to try it, and here's where the hidden staircase comes in. Since the restaurant is underground, you'll need to watch for the staircase down to Port City Underground's entrance.
The restaurant is handicap accessible, using an elevator on the main level from the front of the building. You can also park behind the restaurant and come in the rear entrance through the walk-out basement door.
Have you ever trekked down the hidden staircase to the secret door leading into Port City Underground Pizzeria?
