Mark your calendars: one of the most photo-worthy festivals of the year is returning to Iowa this summer. The Harvestville Farm Sunflower Festival will take place in August and it’s expected to be even bigger and more beautiful than ever. Here’s what you need to know about this fun and sunny summer festival.
The festival is carefully timed to the peak of the sunflower blossoms so the exact festival dates can vary by several days. The festival expected to happen in early to mid-August.
The festival is about as photogenic as festivals get. There are 10 acres of sunflowers and photo props in various locations. A creative photographer could have fun with this blue couch!
There will be lots of fun things for kids to do and there's a long list of planned activities. Some examples: ducky races, a giant slide, horse and tractor swings, wiggle cars and more.
Because the sunflowers vary in height, it's possible to find the perfect backdrop for any photo portrait, whether you're photographing an infant or a basketball player.
For a small fee, attendees can pick sunflowers to bring home. Guests are welcome to bring their own buckets and clippers - sunflower stems are thick so make sure the clippers can cut through something substantial.
You might work up an appetite soaking up this gorgeous festival. The Pitchfork Cafe is a restaurant on site that will be serving up some concession-style food that's almost as fresh and beautiful as the sunflowers in the field.
Harvestville Farm is located in the far corner of southeast Iowa, about 75 miles from Iowa City or about 30 miles from the Villages of Van Buren. Looking for more beautiful sunflower farms? Get your camera ready: here’s a tour of five sunflower fields you can visit on a single road trip.
