Iowa sure gets a lot of snow in the winter! Huge blizzards drop tons of powder all over the Hawkeye State during what might seem like our longest and dreariest season. Make the best of our next snow day by heading out to find a fantastic winter wonderland right here in Iowa. A few of our favorites are listed below!
1. Iowa City
Iowa City is a dreamy spot to spend a snow day in the Hawkeye State! This charming town is a UNESCO City of Literature, and it earned that designation thanks to its famous bookshops - some of which feature cafes. Curl up with a new read and a cup of cocoa, coffee, or tea and watch the snowflakes fall.
2. Mt. Crescent Ski Area, Honey Creek
Mt Crescent Ski Area is one spot where you can ski and sled in the famous Loess Hills! This quiet ski area is the perfect place for a peaceful day on the slopes.
3. Any of the parks along the Cedar River, Cedar Falls
Cedar Falls is such a scenic city! Catch views of the Cedar River from one of the many parks on its banks, like Robbins Lake Park, Sokol Park, Seminole Valley Park, or Sac and Fox Trail City Park.
4. Yellow River State Forest
If you love kickin' up fresh power on your snowmobile, head to Yellow River State Park. You might run into a crowd if you're heading out on a beautiful day after a good snow!
5. The High Trestle Trail Bridge
The peaceful and quiet High Trestle Trail Bridge in Madrid makes for a splendid sight in a snowstorm. The bridge deck can be icy, so bring your trail crampons or microspikes if you've got 'em.
6. Cone Park, Sioux City
If you're looking for a low-key snowtubing experience, head to Sioux City! Cone Park offers the best sledding hill in the region, and it's perfect for families.
7. Seven Oaks Recreation, Boone
For a more intense day on the slopes, visit Seven Oaks Recreation in Boone. Not only will you find the largest sledding hill in Iowa right here, but their 11 trails include two terrain parks and a whole lot of fun.
