It seems like all the doomsday scares come around this time of the year. First it was the Y2K scare predicting doomsday with the coming of the new millennium, or the Mayan Apocalypse prediction that the world would end on December 21, 2012. Now, the latest prediction comes from the cult “Sword of God,” who say that our doomsday is set to occur on January 1, 2017. If you buy into this stuff, it seems like you should start looking into places to wait out the doomsday – these 12 places in Iowa are a good place to start:
1. Anamosa
Anamosa is home to Anamosa State Penitentiary, and of course, we all know that a prison is just about the safest place you can be in an apocalypse. You're surrounded by a barbed wire fence, locked inside of an extremely secure location, with plenty of food and medicine to hold you over - what more could you need?
2. O'Brien County
According to the most recent Iowa State University farmland value survey, O'Brien County now has the most valuable farmland in the state, and that means this is a prime place to start homesteading in the event of an apocalypse.
3. Sabula
An island would be an ideal location to wait out the apocalypse, right?! Well lucky for us, Iowa has its own island - Sabula. All you have to do is block off the few roads that lead onto the island, and you can enjoy life on that waterfront property you've always dreamed of.
4. Johnson
Johnson is home to Camp Dodge, a great place to be if there's an impending doomsday. Why wouldn't you want to be in a highly guarded military base surrounded by trained soldiers? It's really an ideal location... Plus there is plenty of firepower.
5. Missouri Valley
Missouri Valley ranks 4th in the state for per capita gun stores, which makes it an ideal place to be for an apocalypse, as you will have better opportunities for self defense.
6. Mitchell County
Mitchell County was recently named the healthiest county in the state, so people living here won't even have to start a rigorous health plan to get in shape for surviving the apocalypse.
7. Coralville
The Costco Wholesale Warehouse in Coralville is a great place to be if there is an apocalypse coming. I mean, doesn't everyone dream of living inside a Costco anyway? An apocalypse is a good excuse to follow that dream. With literally all of your heart's desires stockpiled on endless shelves, all you have to do is barricade the doors and live out your days in wholesale heaven.
8. Grundy Center
Grundy Center was recently named the safest place in the state, with no murders or violent crimes in the last recorded year. Obviously, this peaceful community would be a good place to wait out the craziness and violence of the apocalypse.
9. Kalona
Kalona is situated right next to the largest solar farm in the state, making it the place where you are most likely to get power after the apocalypse.
10. Iowa City
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City is another of the safest places to be in this case. Not only are hospitals secure, but you have plenty of medicine and food already stockpiled for you. And if you're lucky, there will still be some doctors there to provide treatment to anyone who is sick or injured.
11. Sattre
Probably the most remote place in Iowa, Sattre is the perfect place to wait out the next doomsday. Located in the middle of nowhere in Winneshiek County, Sattre is about 40 miles from the nearest town along a series of winding gravel roads that make it easy to get lost. If you're looking for remoteness, Sattre is the place for you.
12. Fort Madison
Fort Madison is one of the very best places to be in the event of an apocalypse. First off, there is the prison, which makes for a safe and secure place to hide out. Second, Fort Madison ranks 15th in the state for gun stores, so you will have plenty of self protection, and third, Fort Madison has a railway system that you could use to make supply runs or transport people. The opportunities are basically endless in Fort Madison.
