Is there any more fascinating place in all of Iowa than Effigy Mounds National Monument? Every time I see pictures of this ancient landscape, where Iowa’s earliest residents turned the ground itself into massive works of art, I want to go back and explore some new trails to see what I can discover. The good news is, the monument is full of small and charming trails that each hold a new adventure. One of the trails that not many people know about is Hanging Rock Trail, a 5.7-mile out-and-back trail that just might be the most enchanting hike in Iowa. A moderately challenging route with some uneven terrain, Hanging Rock Trail will take you through some stunningly beautiful views before arriving at one of the most magnificent views in the entire Hawkeye State.
