The beautiful Mines of Spain recreation area is one part of the Hawkeye State that’s worth exploring for nature lovers and historians alike. Visit for views from atop a staggeringly high cliff and to learn about the early history of Iowa.
The Mines of Spain recreation area is located on the outskirts of Dubuque, and the park is so worth visiting to see amazing Iowa scenery.
Horseshoe Bluff is the defining feature of the area, which was the very first spot founded by Europeans in Iowa.
You can spend days exploring the Mines of Spain and still not see it all! There are 15 miles of hiking trails, four miles of cross country ski trails, an interpretive center, a butterfly garden, and more.
Julien Dubuque set up a fur trading and mining spot here, long before any colonial towns were established.
While much of the Mines of Spain recreation area is full of natural wonder, the stunning castle-like tower that sits atop the bluff is a man-made memorial to Dubuque, and the view from up here is remarkable.
On a clear day, you can see for miles up and down the Mississippi River. It's easy to see why this was such an important spot for trade in early Iowan history.
Prior to Julien Dubuque's settlement of the area, the region was occupied by the Meskwaki tribe.
The leader of the Meskwaki at the time was Peosta, who worked and traded with Dubuque. It's believed that Julien married Peosta's daughter.
