Ready for a real Iowa treat? This food market needs to go on your bucket list, right now.
NewBo City Market, located in the recently reinvented NewBo neighborhood, is in eastern Iowa.
The town of Cedar Rapids experienced a devastating flood in 2008. The NewBo neighborhood was an agricultural and manufacturing hub in the late 1800s. There was once a meatpacking plant here, and the NewBo Market building was formerly a warehouse and metalworks for Iowa Manufacturing. Just across the bridge, the Czech Village is an important cultural center for the town.
Since the flood of 2008 and NewBo City Market's opening in 2012, this entrepreneurial incubator has launched countless small businesses.
It's a food-lovers paradise, offering a delicious selection of some of the most amazing food from Iowan chefs and cooks.
The selection of food here is diverse, to say the least.
The food at La Reyna is famously fabulous. In the mood for Greek? Try Zaytoon. There's a wood-fired pizza oven right inside the market and the folks who run it make divine and rustic pizzas. If you are looking for the ultimate healthy treat, try the juice bar; Get Fresh. Dessert? Stop by That One Cupcake Place, Nelson's Ice Cream, or Sweetopia.
Be sure to stroll around the market before you make a decision.
Be prepared to get hung up on the Bacon cupcakes from That One Cupcake Place.
Here's a map of each and every vendor at NewBo City Market.
Keep in mind that this is largely a business incubator, so booths change hands sometimes.
Everything a food-lover needs is right here.
You can even take some Iowa-goodness home with you. Big Boy Meats has all of the locally-raised meat products as well as free-range eggs you'll need. Stop by Pickle Creek Herbs, Rustic Hearth Bakery, and Sausage Foundary to get the ingredients for the best-ever home-cooked meal.
There's more to NewBo City Market than food, of course.
Enjoy spices, locally made household goods, and flowers.
Situated in raised beds in front of the market are several large vegetable gardens.
These Learning Gardens provide food for area organizations like Feed Iowa First, HACAP, and Horizons.
NewBo City Market is food truck friendly.
Many of their outdoor events include several area food trucks.
There's an outdoor concert every Friday night at the market called, Rock the Block.
