Iowa is full of stunning rural and urban beauty, but nothing quite blends our towns, cities, and natural wonders quite like the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway. Any time spent traveling along this extraordinary landscape is sure to be a memory that you treasure for life.
The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway is a 220-mile adventure that shows off remarkably unique topography.
These rolling hills rise up seemingly out of nowhere in Western Iowa, covering the state from north to south for more than 220 miles, though the tract is only 15 miles wide.
You'll also have many opportunities to get out of the car and stretch your legs. The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway passes by Preparation Canyon State Park, Waubonsie State Park, Broken Kettle Grasslands, and more.
There are seemingly endless spots to pull over and head out on a hike. Many travelers make this a camping road trip, with an overnight stay at Preparation Canyon.
The Missouri Valley and Loess Hills are most scenic in the fall, when the leaves start to change. The bright bursts of color will leave you with lasting memories of Iowa's beauty.
