What Are The Must-Do Attractions In The Loess Hills?
- The Hitchcock Nature Center is one of the best spots in this unique geographical landscape for families, located near the Nebraska border. This preserve features several simple trails that are ideal for beginner hikers and offer some stunning views of the rolling hills. There are also some more challenging hikes for experts. One of our favorite things to see in the area is the cargo trails rolling through the area.
- Brent's Trail, an eight-mile hike between the Gleason-Hubbel Wildlife Area and the Murray Hill Scenic Overlook, is one of very few trails in Iowa to be given a difficult rating by AllTrails. So is this challenging hike worth the effort? For veteran hikers, absolutely - the trek looks amazing through all four seasons, and the massive elevation gain of 1,646 feet is well worth it for the views the final destination provides.
What Are The Best Flower Festivals In Iowa?
- We mentioned Pella's famous Tulip festival above, but don't miss the smaller and more rustic Orange City Tulip Festival, located in the city of the same name. Being held the 16th, 17th, and 18th of May this year, the 84th annual event will feature an amazing parade through town showing off traditional Dutch culture, music, and performances. The streets will be lined with tulips, food and craft vendors will be out in force - and yes, they'll have plenty of Dutch pastries!
- Bloomsbury Farm is active through the year, with festivals in almost every season, but summer is when they go all out with the Flowers and Wine Festival. This is a great one for the grownups, as there are plenty of opportunities to sip your way through the fields. The kids definitely won't be bored, though - farm-themed activities and photo-ops about. And of course, the farm's famous flower fields are open for business.
