Eighty-eight thousand. That’s a massive number. Especially when it’s a number of square feet. Even more impressive if it’s the number of square feet of the brand new skate park that opened recently in downtown Des Moines. And that’s exactly what it is. Believe it or not, there’s now an 88,000-square-foot skatepark on the banks of the Des Moines River in Iowa. And not only is it the largest skatepark in the Hawkeye State, but it’s actually the largest skatepark in America!
The new Lauridsen Skatepark is a five-acre complex that forms the northern terminus of the Principal Riverwalk in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. The address is 901 2nd Avenue.
It's a beautiful facility, and, as we've already mentioned, a massive one. There's room for everyone here, from beginning skaters to world-class professionals. Plus, admission is free and it's open year-round.
Features of the park include a depth range of 5 to 10 feet, hips, extensions, escalators, layback walls, gaps, rails, transfers, elevation changes, pipe coping, pool coping, and pool tile. There's a street course, a skate promenade, a pool course, an art feature, and so much more.
The skatepark is open seven days a week, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., weather permitting. It is well-lit after dark. Please, no loitering after hours. There isn't any designated parking for the skatepark, but some street parking is available along the west side of West River Drive (don't park on the east side of River Drive, the side closest to the water, unless you want a parking ticket, though!), with plans to add more designated parking at a future date.
With all those offerings, Lauridsen Skatepark has something for everyone. To plan a visit or learn more, head to the skatepark’s website or Facebook page. Did you know Iowa boasted the largest skatepark in America? Pretty amazing stuff! We’ve also got the longest glow-in-the-dark trail in the whole nation.
