Hearken to the land of the Amana for a weekend of old England and Celtic fun in Iowa this October.
The Iowa Renaissance Festival began 29 years ago in 1992. For the past 20 years, folks have been gathering at Middle Amana Park to enjoy several days of medieval fun.
This family-friendly RenFest is a great way to ignite you and your youngster’s curiosity in times past and is also a way to have some interactive, non-electronic time with your friends and family.
The Iowa Renaissance Festival brings in entertainment such as jousting, with two knights astride running horses striving to break their long lances on one another's armor or knock their opponent completely off of their mount.
Sword fighting, fencing, and even wrestling with daggers draw loud applause. Drums and bagpipes liven the air and mystical harps and flutes grace the ear.
Don’t worry about packing meals - water bottles are the only food or drink item that is allowed to be carried into the festival.
Plan to purchase some of the many tasty food offerings that await you within the festival grounds, such as turkey legs, nachos, brats, burgers, kettle corn, homemade root beer, shaved ice, donuts, dutch pastries, coffee, and yes, even honey mead. Finally, there are a host of merchants selling swords, leatherwork, jewelry, crystals, and head-to-toe costumes of every sort.
Typically there are two weekends of fun, but this year a third festival will be held on October 9 and 10. The day starts at 10:00 a.m. and goes until 6:00 p.m.
Campgrounds are nearby and a shuttle van will run from Amana RV Center starting at 11:00 a.m. each day. Family-friendly costumes are welcome and all weapons must be peace-tied and will be inspected. Bring your pets as long as they are on a leash and well behaved.
