Iowa is one of the most scenic and beautiful states in the country, despite the reputation for being a flyover state. Nature lovers in particular can always find something to enjoy around here! If you’re looking for a unique day trip idea, head to the eastern border of the state and watch Iowa bald eagles soar through the skies.
Every fall, Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge comes alive with color and wildlife unique to the Mississippi River region.
Explore the refuge and make your way down towards the river, where you'll be in for a real treat. From October through January, you can watch hundreds of bald eagles hunt and play right here in the Hawkeye State.
Bring your binoculars and look high into the trees for resting and nesting birds. They are quite a sight, and Port Louisa is a wildlife photographer paradise.
On a clear day, you can watch eagles hunt, fish, and fly above the Mississippi River from any of the gorgeous overlooks at Port Louisa. It's truly a sight to see!
There's nothing more relaxing than watching these majestic birds soar over the water. Theirs is truly a comeback story that proves how well conservation programs can work!
