Greenfield is a small town of just 2,000 residents. It’s located in the southwestern area of the state. If you aren’t already familiar with this quaint Iowa community, you might not consider it for a road trip destination. This town has a lot to offer, though.
It’s in the middle of farm country, 80 miles from Omaha and 55 miles from Des Moines.
Check it out. Greenfield is a great place to spend the day in Iowa.
Stop by the corner of E Iowa and NE 2nd Street to see the Schildberg Car Collection.
This remodeled Ford dealership building is home to Dennis Schildberg’s extensive collection of antique cars. They are on public display 24/7 in the front of the dealership, or you can set up an appointment ahead of time to get a tour and see the 15 vehicles up close.
The Iowa Aviation Museum features vintage aircraft and aviation artifacts including a 1929 Stearman and the oldest Curtiss Robin in existence.
It’s located at 251 Airport Road. Visit Monday through Saturday between 10 am and 5 pm or Sunday between 1 pm and 5 pm.
Inside the Aviation Museum is the Pilot’s Hall of Fame.
Displays honor Iowans who have made important contributions to the growth of aviation throughout history.
The Warren Cultural Center is a 26,000-square-foot building that anchors the Greenfield downtown area.
It offers an auditorium, gallery, private meeting rooms, and it’s the home of Empowering Adair County Foundation and Adair County ISU Extension and Outreach. The building is completely restored to its former glory as the E.E. Warren Opera House.
Ed & Eva’s is a store on the street level of the Warren Cultural Center that offers work by Iowa artists.
You’ll find them at 154 Public Square Suite B.
The Adair County Courthouse, located at Iowa Avenue and 1st Street was built in 1891.
It’s part of the Greenfield Public Square Historic District and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Hotel Greenfield is a remodeled historic hotel built in 1920.
It’s located at 110 E Iowa Street. It was refurbished in 2010 and there’s now a restaurant and lounge inside the building.
When it’s time for a break, stop by The Corner.
This combination coffee shop and antique shop is simply charming. It’s located at 284 Public Square.
