Get Off The Freeway And Onto This Scenic Back Road Between Marquette and Guttenberg, Iowa
One of the great things about driving is that you’re the master of your own fate. Sure, you can head straight to your destination – but what’s the fun in doing that all the time? When there’s time to spare and the weather is nice, it’s the perfect time to get off the beaten path and explore some of the most beautiful spots on the backroads. My personal favorite of Iowa’s scenic byways is the River Bluffs Scenic Byway, which starts on the Mississippi River at Marquette and takes a winding route around to explore some of Iowa’s most beautiful small towns before winding up back on the river at Guttenberg. The whole route will take about two hours of driving to make a full circle, but that’s only if you drive straight through – and with sites like these along the way, you’ll want to carve out a whole day for this adventure.
Have you taken the River Bluffs Scenic Byway before? Tell us about your adventures on this beautiful scenic drive in the comments section! The City of Elkader has more details about the byway and the adventures along the way on its official website, and if you want to know why it’s worth making a stop at this unique town, take a look into our past coverage of Elkader’s fascinating history. And of course, if you’re about to embark on a road trip adventure, make sure the car is stocked with road trip snacks!
