It’s not surprising that Iowa residents living near Des Moines have a higher income. According to a report by U.S. News, the Des Moines metropolitan area is actually the richest in the nation with the highest median income relative to the low cost of living.
2. Johnston: $39,687
The small cities around Des Moines as well as the capital city itself are the fastest growing in the country, too.
3. Urbandale: $38,078
More people moved to the Des Moines metro area last year than to the ultra-cool Austin, Texas.
4. West Des Moines: $37,522
The high income in the area is due to the strong job market, of course. Publishing businesses, financial services, and the insurance industry employ a great deal of the communities surrounding Des Moines.
5. Wahpeton: $36,258
This little Iowa town is part of the Iowa Great Lakes region in northwestern Iowa. It’s located on the west side of West Lake Okoboji.
6. Polk City: $35,394
This beautiful Iowa town is located right along Saylorville Lake and next to Big Creek State Park.
7. Cumming: $35,205
This little town has just 351 residents and is Senator Tom Harkin’s hometown. It’s just a few miles west of Norwalk and south of Des Moines.
8. Windsor Heights: $34,775
This is another town that ranks among the richest in the state and is also part of the Des Moines – West Des Moines Metropolitan area.
9. Waukee: $34,703
The school district here is the fastest growing in the state. They have over 1,000 staff and nearly 8,000 students.
10. Norwalk: $34,222
This is another fast-growing Des Moines area town offering the best of small-town life in close proximity to the city.

Beaconsfield is the home of the first Hy-Vee store, pictured here. It is the least populated town in our great state, and the 11 or so people who live there have a per capita income of $5,990 per year.
