One of the perks of living in eastern Iowa is being close to the Mississippi River. This historic body of water is so important to Iowans, and we really don’t take it for granted. While the Dubuque Riverwalk is one of the most famous riverwalks in the country, there’s a small town upstream that has a charming, enchanting riverwalk that’s so worth a visit.
The small town of Guttenberg, Iowa is home to fewer than 2,000 people, but you'll find one of the best riverwalks in the state here!
The Lock and Dam #10 along the Riverwalk is a marvel of engineering that doubles as a photographer's paradise. Enjoy the river nearby and look for Eagles in the winter!
The Landing is a great spot to watch for the majestic bald eagles in the cooler months, or to rent a boat and enjoy the river and some fishing in the summer.
While you’re in Guttenberg, travel just a few miles north to McGregor to climb Pikes Peak, and take in a stunning view of the Mississippi River Valley! It might be the best overlook in Iowa. Read more about it here: The One State Park In Iowa That Stands Out From The Rest.
It’s easy to make a day trip out of both! Hike Pike’s Peak and then head south to Guttenberg for a stroll along the water and dinner at the Dam Riverview Sports Bar, where you’ll find Iowa hospitality and some fine food.
