With so much anticipation, opening night on Aug. 14, 1890, drew in more than 800 customers, each paying a whopping $5 to see French composer Georges Bizet’s Carmen. Some of the greatest entertainers of the day starred on the stage in the following years, such as Al Jolson, John Phillip Sousa, Will Rogers, and George M. Cohan. - Oakland Cemetery Black Angel (1000 Brown St. Iowa City, IA): Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City has been the main burial ground since 1843. Mostly a peaceful place, one gravestone stands out as pretty creepy. Erected in 1913, the Black Angel monument has drawn many people to its side responding to reports of the paranormal. Some have witnessed the statue changing color from bronze to black. Local legends include any girl who is kissed at the angel’s feet in the moonlight will die in six months, and giving the angel a kiss is said to make the person's heart stop. While in the area this place is definitely worth a stop — especially at night.
