Have you been wanting to camp this summer but all the campgrounds you check are fully booked for the rest of the season? Look no further, because Diamond Lake Park in Iowa is a no reservation required campground with 80 electric sites and another 40 non-electrical sites.
Many of these sites are right along the water; you can fall asleep to the sounds of fish splashing and watch the sun rise over the water from your tent.
You simply can’t beat this lake-side view, or the peace and quiet - only paddle boats and boats with electric motors are allowed on the lake.
Where else can you fish or launch a kayak or canoe right from your lake-shore campsite?
Or, use the handy kayak launcher provided at the dock!
On both sides of the lake, you’ll find many grassy jetties that stick out into the 90-acre lake, perfect for camping, picnicking, or fishing.
You might notice several solar panel-clad contraptions in the lake. These are called "solarbees" and are used to help keep the lake water clean. Each unit circulates around 14 million gallons of water daily, working to prevent stagnation and blue-green blooms as well as improving the habitat for aquatic creatures in the lake.
If you’ve always wanted to try out kayaking but don’t own the equipment yourself, call the Poweshiek County Conservation Center to sign up for one of the Thursday evening paddling sessions through September 2nd. They’re free with all equipment (and a short how-to lesson) provided.
If you can pull yourself away from the water, explore the several miles of mown grassy trails around the lake and within the Diamond Lake Wildlife Area. If you’d rather explore on a bicycle, the several miles-long hard-surface Stagecoach Trail takes you through the park and on into the nearby town of Montezuma.
There you just may want to stop for ice cream at their tasty Dairy King, also a walk-up establishment.
Before you leave, stop by the selfie station at the Foster Center at the south entrance of the park for a lovely photo op.
For another change of pace, bring kids to the fun playground within the park. They’ll have a blast on the posse of metal horses.
So if you’re ready to relax and recharge in nature this weekend, head to Poweshiek County’s own Diamond Lake Park for a fun, last-minute getaway the whole family will love. And if you can’t make it to Diamond Lake, try one of these 10 other no-reservation-required campgrounds spread throughout the state .
