Over the last few decades, Iowa’s county conservation boards have worked tirelessly to preserve prairie, river, forest, and marshland for Iowans to enjoy and experience. One successful project that’s used and loved by Iowans from all over is the Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt. Originally acquired to preserve the Skunk River Oxbows and land, the park now offers an experience with native and restored prairie, wildlife, and a bridge that’s over one hundred years old.
Tucked along the Skunk River Oxbows in Polk County is the preserved Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt, where you'll find hiking, camping, paddling, and fishing opportunities.
Though the bridge still spans the Skunk River, it's now only open to pedestrian traffic. Walk confidently out to the center, where you'll be high above the river, taking in gorgeous views of Iowa's wild natural beauty.
Whether you choose to visit the Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt for a day trip, or stay for a few days of primitive camping, you'll be glad you hiked out to the bridge and you'll remember these river views forever.
