Iowa is full of beautiful churches and chapels, both big and small. They offer some of the most beautiful architecture that the state has to offer, as well as rich histories and traditions. This amazing chapel in Iowa’s historic St. Donatus is located in the most unforgettable setting.
The Pieta chapel is situated at the end of the Way of the Cross trail in the charming St. Donatus, Iowa's own Luxembourg village.
The winding path up to the chapel is a big part of the whole experience.
The Outdoor Way of the Cross trail features 14 red brick stations. Each station contains an original lithographic print portraying Christ’s Passion.
This trail is believed to be the first of its kind in the United States. Along the trail, you will enjoy amazing scenery, including towering trees and ancient rock formations.
Don’t be surprised if you come across a friendly sheep wandering around during your walk.
The trail might even lead you to believe that you walked into the charming Luxembourg countryside in the 1800s.
At the top of the hill, you’ll get a spectacular view of St. Donatus and the gorgeous landscape below.
At the end of the Way of the Cross is the Pietà Chapel.
This charming little chapel was built in 1885 with funds left by Father Flammang. It is dedicated in his memory.
The chapel is modeled after the Chapel du Bildchen in Vianden, Luxembourg.
Inside the chapel a statue of the pietà, portraying Mary cradling her son on her lap after the crucifixion.
